The work environment can be filled with many distractions. The chatter of your coworkers, the pop up ads on your computers asking you to take a quick quiz, or even your cell phone just staring at you to take a quick scroll down Facebook. You may just be tired from that late-night Game of Thrones episode.
I have some Monday Motivation: five ways for you to improve your productivity at work so that you can finish the MOST tasks in one day, even when you get distracted.
1. SET A SCHEDULE
At the end of your workday, create a schedule for the next day before you leave the office. You should be able to prioritize what tasks need to be done for that day. It is always helpful to have a to-do list handy! You can also get a sense of accomplishment when you scratch off that you finished that task.
2. GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK
If you’re starting to feel yourself slowing down, it is probably that time of the day when you need to get away from your desk. This can be a 5-10 min break, or it can be a lunch break. Head to the water cooler, or go to the cafeteria to pick up some food or a coffee. Anything to get your self out of the funk.
3. KEEP YOUR WORKSPACE CLEAN AND CLEAR
Albert Einstein always said, “ A cluttered desk is a cluttered mind”. Try and keep your desk in a way that is comfortable for you. Always know where your papers, emails, and important documents are. You don’t want to waste time looking for things that should already be organized.
4. TRY TO ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS
You know how you work best. Don’t let your coworkers and other disruptions get in your way. If you need to shut your door or plug in those headphones, do it! Turn your phone on silent, exit out of those unnecessary tabs, and get to work!
5. AVOID MULTITASKING
Do you get more done when you multitask? Yes. Is there a higher chance of errors and mistakes? Yes. Multitasking also reduces creativity and engagement. Try and focus on just one task at a time.
Finally, productivity at work is what helps you accomplish your tasks. Think about how you’re spending your time at work. Make some changes! If you ever feel like you are falling behind, make sure you think about these five tips.
